The depiction of Jack's failed marriage to Ruth is just amazing here. The marriage was said to have failed in the courtship. Jack's desire blinded him to Ruth's ambition. Ruth's ambition made her believe that she could change Jack into something he was not and could not be. What a tragedy that they met. You feel the sadness of it viscerally.

Wow, this is the amazing true story of a highly placed British Intelligence Agent (MI6, SIS) who was a double agent passing info to the Soviets from before WWII until the early 50's.

I did not know that Le Carre's Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy was loosly based on these events .

Phil is finished with Telling Our Way to the Sea: A Voyage of Discovery in the Sea of Cortez
This book has been a pleasant surprise. It reads like a novel, but it's apparently a collage of actual events. The author and two other professors take a group of college students each year to survey the ecology of the Sea of Cortez off Baja California. It's a unique mix of marine biology, ecology, evolution, epistemology and history.
