Bou is starting Decolonising My Body: A Radical Exploration of Rituals and Beauty
I liked it, and definitely learnt a lot about decolonising layers of myself. I also realised how massively lucky I am to be in touch with my roots. I couldn’t imagine not knowing where I’m from and having to work my genealogy backwards. At the same time, the book tackles so many aspects of decolonisation, including geologists, and still refers to the US as “America”. Disappointing and quite frankly, annoying

I absolutely adore Marjan Kamali’s writing style. She really has the ability of telling her readers a story they haven’t lived through, from the perspective of different people without ever making it confusing. She gives everyone in the story space and empathy, regardless of what their actions and decisions led to. In a way, there’s a main character but there’s so much more to this book than Roya’s story.

Bou is finished with Women
Romanticising large age gap queer relationships needs to stop. A 19-year age gap is inherently wrong regardless of the genders involved - same goes for abusive and unhealthy relationships. The story is also full of stereotypes. Honestly, it really feels like a cis het woman's quick visit to queerness, followed by her entitlement and judgment of a community she's not part of and only experienced a fragment of.

I liked it! The storyline was a bit slow at times, but I enjoyed how intersected it was. I’m not necessarily sure what the last chapter (two pages) means for the story, but all that came before was nice to read! :)
