Dymphna is starting Family of Liars
I was not a fan if We Were Liars, unlike many others it wasn’t a gut punch for me. I did like Lockhart’s writing though, so thought I’d at least give this a shot. So far, I’m enjoying it.

Dymphna is starting The Hound of the Baskervilles (Sherlock Holmes, #5)
I’m actually listening to the audiobook narrated by Stephen Scalon.
Sherlock was my childhood hero, it’s wonderful visiting an old friend.

Love this book already, ie:

“You”, he says, “are so much weirder than I thought.”
“Well, for what it’s worth, before tonight I assumed you went into a broom closet and entered power saving mode whenever you weren’t at work, so I guess we’re both surprised.”
“Now you are being ridiculous, “ he says, “when I’m not at work I’m in my coffin in the basement of an old Victorian mansion.”

This is the first time I've read (well, in this case listened to) this book in years. I had forgotten SO much!

I must admit I'm having trouble with this book. The writing is beautiful, the plot is amazing and original but jeez it's so lacking in hope.

When I've read similar books, black humour tempers the sadness, here Mieville uses beauty. I will keep going, I know it will be worth it.

That fucking squirrel. And that bob cat. And the jumbo quail (wild turkeys).

This book is a wonderful distraction from how fucking uncomfortable being pregnant is.

This book is so good I put it down a while back to savour it, now I'm back into it. The writing is so spot on.

Well so far we've had casual racism, sexism and 'grooming'. I hope the story can redeem itself.

Ugh it's getting harder to keep reading/listening to this book. The second trip into Blind Michael's 'now' is dragging on. I'll keep going though.

I'm listening to this one in audiobook format. The 'Australian' accents are of course more common in this book than the previous Alex Price book, and frankly they're fucking awful and are distracting me from the plot. I've cognitively reframed them by pretending it's not Australia they're referring to but some strange mix of New Zealand, South Africa and Australia.
