Even though the page count is low, this book is not to be taken lightly. Instead of a quick powerwalk, reading it is like plodding through loose wet sandy alluvial plains. Reminds me of Willa Cather's Death Comes for the Archbishop. Difficult scenes to stomach at times, and the characters are problematic and human, def not for the Fennimore Cooper crowd honoring the noble indigenous. Very engrossing, poetic.
