I want to enjoy this series because of its potential to be engaging and entertaining, but I find the pacing of this particular disjointed. The writing has made Gavin seem inattentive to his surroundings - if this is from a desire for character development, it’s not working well.

From what I’ve read, The Jade Egg focuses more on the internal conflict within the main character, Gavin, and his interpersonal relationships with some of the side characters, specifically Wrenlow and Gasper rather than driving the plot that began in the last book forward. I just started chapter 17 and I’d say the action JUST started picking up.
