this book is beautifully written but surrenders to the same pitfalls as all popular science books, where scientific inquiry starts in greece/rome and nowhere else. when the author was discussing this he didn't even give citations because it's just considered "common knowledge."

if a character is constantly "slipping" they're not "slipping" that's just who they are. a good story written badly

The premise itself is interesting but the narrator is very much a woman written by a man and that makes reading this book more tedious than it ought to

It’s written like the author isn’t a human but is writing like they think humans would write

it's wild to me that people are picking up a book that's intended to be a defense of stalin and complaining that it doesn't disparage him. the author's intent is to address common "criticisms" (lies) about stalin, that doesn't mean he thinks stalin is perfect. martens also shows how the task of running a soviet state is many people's responsibility and its failures/successes can't be attributed to one person.

she uses a definition of colonialism that completely overlooks that it is fundamentally a capitalist process. WHY does "one country" invade another, less powerful one? the point is to extract resources and exploit labor, but this isn't really pointed out or emphasized, leaving the reader to fill in the blanks with their own guesses.
