Possum P is starting The Blighted Stars (The Devoured Worlds #1)
if a character is constantly "slipping" they're not "slipping" that's just who they are. a good story written badly

Possum P is starting Annihilation (Southern Reach, #1)
The premise itself is interesting but the narrator is very much a woman written by a man and that makes reading this book more tedious than it ought to

It’s written like the author isn’t a human but is writing like they think humans would write

it's wild to me that people are picking up a book that's intended to be a defense of stalin and complaining that it doesn't disparage him. the author's intent is to address common "criticisms" (lies) about stalin, that doesn't mean he thinks stalin is perfect. martens also shows how the task of running a soviet state is many people's responsibility and its failures/successes can't be attributed to one person.

she uses a definition of colonialism that completely overlooks that it is fundamentally a capitalist process. WHY does "one country" invade another, less powerful one? the point is to extract resources and exploit labor, but this isn't really pointed out or emphasized, leaving the reader to fill in the blanks with their own guesses.

the subject matter is compelling on its own and the author doesn't mess around with weird rhetorical flourishes. she just states her case, supports it and moves on. i like that a lot, it makes the book very readable for my dry autistic ass

Possum P is starting Black, Brown, Yellow, and Left: Radical Activism in Los Angeles (American Crossroads) (Volume 19)
I have no idea how this author could be writing about Marxist-Leninist organizations without ever actually citing or, presumably, reading Lenin. It's very clear by some of her bizarre conclusions that she hasn't. For example, she claims the "structural" nature of racism and its material consequences proceed from the aggregate effects of individual racist biases.

the constant asides about pluralism and competing interests are very frustrating. just make your point. everyone understands that there's multiple perspectives you don't have to constantly remind us

the author uses a lot of lists to add length, is vague and hasn't cited anything at all in the preface

black men in LOINCLOTHS murdering an all-white audience? is this for real?

this is the second time i've tried reading the book and it's still as stiff and stale as it was the first time. he actually made reference to some tig ol biddies. and like....... if people are dying en masse i really doubt the military is going to be fucked to enforce a quarantine at that point.
