I don’t blame the consul for getting lost in Kassad’s story. Jesus Christ.

“‘I am God’ becomes a humanistic solipsism: humanity stewing in its own juices, unable to see beyond nuclear weapons, chemical and biological warfare, industrial waste, pollution of the seas and the atmosphere, the killing of the planet.

Man’s inhumanity to man…[a] lack of respect for the human potential as opposed to the human past.” (54)

Schuster draws the line between simulation of truth and belief systems. He argues that humans are operating on a foundation of built-in programming, under the control of new programs we have acquired through evolution. While he is careful to remind you to watch your disbeliefs, as they are merely another form of belief, you are challenged to blindly follow Schuster down his rabbit hole of reality and the self.

“The wrath of God lies sleeping. It was hid a million years before men were and only men have power to wake it. Hell ain’t half full. Hear me. Ye carry war of a madman’s making onto a foreign land. Ye’ll wake more than the dogs.”

“There is no such joy in the tavern as upon the road thereto.”

Such a well-written female narrator that I have no problem living vicariously through. She’s interesting, self-aware, observant, dependent, and so far from perfect. I was a little thrown off at the “climax” just because the style of writing, dialogue, and tone shifted so much and it felt a bit like the author was not as experienced with non sfw writing…

Nostalgia goes beyond individual psychology. At first glance, nostalgia is a longing for a place, but actually it is a yearning for a different time—the time of our childhood, the slower rhythms of our dreams. Nostalgia is a rebellion against the modern idea of time…The nostalgic desire to obliterate history…refusing to surrender to the irreversibility of time that plagues the human condition.

From the time of René Descartes (1596-1650), however, the philosophical interpretation of conscientia simply as high-order knowledge of mental states began to predominate. It has to do with certainty; in an important sense, consciousness is knowing THAT you know WHILE you know.

Metzinger et al.’s ability to describe the phenomenon-self model, consciousness, the Ego, and the external world model in a way that is “easily” understandable to the layman is incredible. By page 15 he has already broken down our understanding of consciousness and the ways in which we cease to experience the external world every night. In dreamless sleep, we simply do not know that we exist, the ego is nothing

Susan promised. Looking at the number, she missed the expression that crossed Katherine’s face for one fleeting second as she waited.

It was a look of unrelenting hatred.

If she’d seen it, it might have told her she was right about a thought she’d had a few minutes before.

Was confused why a lot of the women in the lab were being described as supermodels with angelic features only to learn it’s coming from the perspective of a lesbian hehe

“No contact with the outside world…the villagers resorted to barbarism. They had almost lost the use of fire. The scientists who found them were treated like gods and they were given everything the villagers had. They went to sleep one night and do you know what happened?”

“In the morning, when they opened the doors of their hut, they found two dead children on their doorstep. They had been slaughtered.”
