Robbie and the typewriter… hmm that was unexpected

Girl wants DRAMA. Wow. She wants a real life dramatic play to happen around her, created and chosen by fate and herself removed from the narrative. Chaos is coming. I’m excited.

Briony’s attitudes towards Lola are the same as her mother’s.
So childish to think that unco-operativeness is as much as a sin as avarice, gluttony or pride.

Paul Marshall you’re a creep. In more ways than one.

McEwan articulating the sensation of times feeling as though it has happened and is cemented, love. A very niche feeling really. Written well and gained a new level of respect for his strange philosophic observations. Clever.

The idea that books and stories aren’t intended to portray good and evil but instead different ways of looking at things - LOVE! never thought of it that way.

Briony is so deeply philosophical, so focused on the intricacies of the world. I adore this style of writing and the comment on not really “ feeling” that everyone in the world has their own private thoughts and experiences because we do not have access to them in the same way we do to ourselves.

There is a really sinister and creepy feel to this book. Danny Hardman watching the CHILDREN and being asked to leave…ew. Also the ominous “and beyond”. Just, no.

I really like Cecilia - definitely the independent older sister. Robbie Turner on the other hand seems like he has a big ego and mocks Cecilia and the family, is this a class thing? Maybe. But he receives an education from them but I don’t think he’s related? As far as I know he’s just the gardener…

Cecilia seems like a vibe. Like her personality. Just wandering around nature and noticing the small effects of the light. I also relate to her wanting to stay at home - holding herself back is both a punishment and a pleasure. Feel like she’s the typical older sister character too.

Looking forward to see the plot progress. Sometimes the language is difficult, but otherwise really enjoying the flow.

Really enjoying this book. Love the set of an old house pre ww2. Enjoying the flow of the book, too. An eccentric little girl who enjoys order and resolution. Very intelligent, but maybe not emotionally? She gets embarrassed by the expression of emotions - as though they have to be kept secret in order for one to be composed.

Also her comments on the “rose” are extremely poetic and beautiful.

Catherine made an interesting point about finding interest in things that relate to us, or in things which contain a part of us. Something to think about there, very profound.

So disappointing that the condition of her knee stopped her from partaking in any real sport - heartbreaking. But a decision that was made for her, something I get the impression she secretly hoped for following retirement.
