Wanted to shoutout the “Museum” chapter. One of the best-written book chapters I’ve ever read in terms of characterization. Von Rumpel reminds me so much like Hans Landa in Inglorious Basterds because of how suave he is in his demands and his torture. I think that’s what’s so terrifying about so many of the Nazi villains in stories is how they know you know they’ll ultimately beat you.

This might be my favorite writing style I’ve ever read. Short and quick writing structure makes the whole thing feel like a ticking clock that builds suspense. Plus, the fact that each chapter is like 3 pages long makes me feel more accomplished when I get through 10 in one sitting.

Finished the first telling of the story. Good solid Tolkien story. Got sent copies of All the Light We Cannot See and Beneath a Scarlet Sky so honestly idk if I’m gonna finish this.

Haven’t read it in a few days but got this gem in the first paragraph I read to sober me up: “Jesus has many lovers of His heavenly kingdom, but few cross-bearers. Many desire His consolation, but few His tribulation. Many will sit down with Him at table, but few will share His fast. All desire to rejoice with Him, but few will suffer for Him,” (88) — woof
