Wonderful prose

This book is so SLOW—but I’m finishing it today or else I’m back of the queue for this booktok book again. (It’s pretty decent writing, but dude, it’s a bit snoozy for me.)

I’m trying to finish this book but it’s dragging on! I’ll probably never read a book with this type of cover on it again. I still want to give romance a chance, but the smut scenes aren’t even good.

Definitely not the worst romance book because the guy is a green flag but still isn’t a good story imo because it’s plain, nothing is creative but some parts are sweet.

Damn this book took a turn. I didn't like how slow it was, but now we're actually getting into things.

Oh yeah—this book also makes me glad I didn’t do any freaky stuff in high school. No dirt on me. None that matter at least… lack of evidence too…

I think I like Terrell, hope he’s not secretly a bad guy. I’m not a fan of mystery, they keep me guessing and I can’t trust anyone 😣
(That’s the point, but I’m still scared when everything blows up in my face)

I do like how easy the style of writing is and it’s my type of read generally speaking, but I have a hard time with main characters I don’t love (and I don’t mean imperfect ones, I love love them if they’re written well). How can Chiamaka expect those near her (Jamie) to actually love and care for her when she’s also self absorbed and treats everyone else like they’re below her?

The writing is decent, but the jokes are super unfunny. I don’t know what in “I’m the reincarnation of Jane Austen’s asshole” is making Chiamaka laugh so hard. The setting and characters are a little unrealistic I feel, but I’m just at the beginning so maybe once I’m actually learning more about their lore they’ll seem more “real”. Anyways, I do hope this book is a 4 stars at least.

I read some reviews and learning about how the book is a bit racist made me sad. I did find Yi Liu a goofy name but I don't blame the author because she isn't Chinese and if those around her okayed the name it really isn't her fault. Regarding the locs controversy... that's on her. I also read somewhere that Ibrahim has a crush on Orion, which is a little annoying now that I know.

AW Orion is honestly cute! El is the "I'm not like other girls" stereotype, but she's not as insufferable because she's not 100% unreasonably stubborn. I like that. She still feels the urge to cry, still feels the tug on her heart strings. I really like this dynamic. Always have, from Blue and Gansey to now them, I loveeeee when there is a class difference, and both have a strong yet compatible personality.

Ah I love how juicy the scene and the build up was! By juicy I mean how everything clicked into place but wasn’t predictable and was dramatic. Gosh El is both extremely lucky and unlucky at the same time.
