I can see why this remains the national epic of Poland and Lithuania. The work is some of the best Romantic poetry I’ve ever read, creating a vivid landscape of life as a minor Polish/Lithuanian noble, and the nationalist rhetoric that would fuel future Polish uprisings is present throughout.
