Not as good as expected a I voted for this for the Cornell book club. Ot didn’t help that the book starts with a way too detailed description of Bessie Coleman’s plane crash. And I read thousands of medical articles at my job as an indexer at the National Library of Medicine - many with photos.

Ruth has found a stone with a hole in it at a stone circle. My great-grandmother on my mother’s side had a stone like that and she called it a peep stone. She could see her husband in it when he was on the road as a missionary. And that was exactly what he was doing he said. She also supposedly could make a bonnet dance. Women would get in a circle, put a bonnet in the middle and she could make it move.

I’m having a serious problem here with the author’s apparent ignorance of medicine. There’s no way a rural practice would have a ct scan and an MRI machine at a cost of at least $100,000 each ( used one maybe as low as $35,000).And two surgical suites with only one doctor and apparently no assistant of any kind, not even a nurse.

Spoiler alert: i believe the topic here is female genital mutilation but for some reason George feels the need to make it all mysterious and secret. Why?
