As a history buff, I bought a special copy of this at The Biltmore during Christmastime to get a deeper view of Gilded Age life. The writing is dense with information, and in combination with the author’s voice—a product of her upbringing and education—it makes for a somewhat challenging read that I’m determined to tackle no matter what.

The language and sentence structure make this a rough read, but I’m determined to finish to get a different perspective on the folktales I’ve already learned about from other sources.

I feel like I’m reading about current events, which is both oddly validating and quietly terrifying.

I’m rereading this now through the lens of an adult, and it’s so relevant to current times in a weirdly comforting way. It’s a nostalgic complement to my experience reading “1984” alongside it.
