This is a rich and textured exploration of characters, anchored around the gentle, quiet steadiness of Theo and his simple mission: To listen generously to those who haven’t been heard.

Macrae Hanke is on page 67 of 264 of And Then There Were None
The blueprint for so much of modern mystery writing, TV, and movies. Reading this after watching the newest Knives Out is evidence of Christie’s impact on the genre. So good!

Macrae Hanke is on page 385 of 592 of The Demon of Unrest: A Saga of Hubris, Heartbreak, and Heroism at the Dawn of the Civil War
This book is an extensive history of how we got to the Civil War while moonlighting as a biography of Lincoln in his first 100 days as our 16th President. It quickly becomes clear that the Civil War was started not just because of ideological differences but because of the men and women behind each argument.

“Standard Oil (SO) was divided…The largest of them…Standard Oil of New Jersey… eventually became Exxon...Next largest…was SO of New York, which ultimately became Mobil. There was Standard Oil (California)…became Chevron; SO of Ohio…became the American arm of BP; SO of Indiana..of Sun(co).“ -p94

Quicker than you can say oil, Yergin recounts the origin of almost every major petroleum company today.🤯

It continues to surprise me how difficult it is to put down a book that outwardly looks as though it belongs in graduate study textbooks. The depth of research is astounding at every turn. Five paragraph sections prompt incredulous statements akin to “This section alone could warrant an entire novel!” Blink and you’ll miss the rise and fall of empires, presidents, and kings.

Such a helpful provider of language and distinction to think about conversion deeply. I’ve loved reading it with Annie!

A comprehensive beginning with roots in scientific discovery and the inception of Civil War era business tactics. Currently tackling the early biography of the OG oil man himself: Rockefeller.
