Different kind of conspiracy. More red strings pointing in different directions, as opposed to IV, where all roads lead back to the Golden Fang. Lots of characters, Pynchon loves naming them and giving them hilarious (Hilarius) names. This is Reagan-era, white collar detective work, a sign of its time, again opposed to IV, showcasing the end of an era.
