Tolkien stated in the foreword of this specific version that he had written LoTR with the intention of writing "a very long story". One must keep that in mind when picking up this novel. It can take some discipline to push through some of the slower parts, but there are so many gems hidden along the path this story takes. Tolkien also utilizes a lot of subtle foreshadowing, which I find very interesting.
