“I know, however, that the Supreme Judge who will pass sentence upon me for all my crimes is already demanding that I enter the portals of eternity, to roast in hellfire.”

“Immediately the devil in me again whispered that this was the cue for my second entrance on the stage for a brutally deceptive play, a performance starring a maniac!”

“I've always had a livid fear of the vengeance of the man I murdered! No, I don't mean the one I killed when I stole the money. That case is already closed, for I have already confessed my guilt. The fact is, I committed another murder before that. And whenever I think of my first victim I almost go mad with terror.”

“My friend, undoubtedly, had tried to explore the regions of the unknown, violating sacred taboos, thereby incurring the wrath of the gods. By trying to pry open the secret portals of forbidden knowledge with his weird mania of optics he had destroyed himself.”

“From the very start I suspected that he was mentally unbalanced. Some might have called him just eccentric, but am convinced he was a lunatic.”

“The pitiful thing was that he was incapable of wiping away the tears which those eyes could still shed. He had no power to threaten her other than that of working himself into an abnormal heat of frenzy. These fits of wrath usually came on whenever he was reminded that he would never again be able to succumb, of his own free will, to the one overwhelming temptation which was always lurking within him.”

"As for you, however, your continued faithfulness has deprived you of all your former pleasures and desires. For three long years you have sacrificed everything for that poor crippled man, without emitting the faintest breath of complaint.”

"Give a guilty man enough rope," rejoined Dr. Akechi philosophically, "and he'll supply enough evidence to hang himself.”

"The dead tell no tales.”

“Instead of pursuing a normal scholastic career, he shattered it abruptly by committing.. murder.”

“Yes, you may consider this the confession of a madman, for I was mad, madly in love with her! Ultimately I began to feel that if she would just look at me, even for a brief passing moment, I could die with the deepest contentment.”

“For many months I have hidden myself away from the light of civiliza-tion, hidden, as it were, like the devil himself.”

"I have failed, but I have no regrets. I have had my revenge. Also I have gained a treasure more precious than a thousand works of art. I mean none other than Otori Fujiko. Now, together with this dear lover of mine, I am embarking on a journey through the skies. When we die, we shall die together.”

“He would kill without a qualm. His personality had done an about-face. The tamed beast had acquired a taste for blood. The impression of that gold mask with a trickle of blood trailing from its crescent grin had made him uncanny.”

“Still, I was amazed by your sharpshooting. You shot my dummy clean through the heart. I shudder to think what would have happened if it had been me.”

“What a bizarre combination. A curious bond between a beautiful girl carefully raised in a good family and a mysterious demon. A terrible golden love.”

“You called him a golden devil, didn't you? Yes, he could be a demon. Supermen are always mistaken for devils rather than gods. But what a lovely devil he is. Gold Mask! Even just the sound of his name makes my heart thrill."

“But to err is human, and even he was no god.”

“Were they relieved by the death of this demon?
Oh no, they were not. They were assailed by an intense disappointment. They sighed, mourning the unsatisfyingly abrupt death of this golden hero.”

“At such times, I suppose, the massive organism known as human society comes down with an acute case of some rare disease and briefly loses its mind. The outbreak of those weird, outlandish events is that astounding.”

“Is there anything in this world as powerful and beautiful as love? Perhaps I had utterly destroyed this clear, beautiful love with the obstinate heart of a moralist.”

“However, there are many instances in which the benevolence of a virtuous man and the guile of a fiend have resided together in one person. Indeed, the more benevolent and appealing to others a person is, the easier it is for the devil within to find disciples.”

“What is more, the jealousy even served as fuel to kindle the flames of my vengeful heart. -your vengeful devil”

“Can you fathom the feelings of a man who is hated after having been adored? Can you understand how my anguish turned to sobs, my sobs to hatred that hardened and took shape as a desire for revenge?”

‘Had she been in love with her mortal enemy without being aware of it? And had that been why she had cried, so full of terrible sadness, when she thought she had buried him in the midnight sea? “Good-bye, Akechi. Can you grant
me a dying wish? Kiss me.”’

“Yes, I like her! I like her, and because I like her, I'll protect her! I won't let you lay one finger on her!”
“Oh, I thought it might be something like that”she chortled. “Well, you go right ahead and protect her.”

“Your guardian angel is dead.”

“When the butterfly's wings stopped fluttering, the kidnapper laid her down gently on the carpet, rearranging her clothing primly and looking down into her gentle, sleeping face with a malicious smile.”

“Well, you certainly showed yourself to be worthy of your name as a famous detective, didn't you! It seems I have lost tonight. Let us call it a defeat. And what of it? Do you honestly think you can take me prisoner? I think you're expecting a little too much, Mr. Detective.”
