I just love how Barbara Kingsolver paints pictures with words. And the sardonic humor in the descriptions, e.g., describing Reynaldo Delgado, "His mustache made two curved lines around the side of his mouth like parentheses, as if everything he might say would be very quiet, and incidental." There's a zinger like this on practically every page.
