“As long as when bad things happened, they happened somewhere else to someone they didn’t know. It was not their problem. Except that everyone knew someone who knew someone who was at the stadium that day and didn’t come home.”

This trilogy is so brutally written in the best way possible, I love it

Really good so far, story has me hook line & sinker!
One nitpick though - some of the contemporary language is immersion-breaking i.e. Martha describes Lidia North as 'Milquetoast', which originated in a comic strip from the 1920s.

I think in the court scene, Martha should have let Dr Page's ego fight with the claim Sally brings after the death is found to be accidental, like
'you dare contradict my disposition? Don't you know who I am?! As a big-shot Harvard-educated Medical scholar I will not bother bandying words with the likes of you!'

Not sure how I feel about the change in writing style. Everyone is either talking past each other or speaking in philosophical metaphor. The purpose is clear but I’d be annoyed if conversations in real life went down like that

So last time I audiobooked Dune & gave it 3/5 - now with movie pt3 on the way I’m gonna do this right & read this & Dune Messiah because I want to be a snobby book fan that says book > movie if it’s really better than the movie (but I very much enjoyed pts 1&2)

Finally had some time to catch up on this, definitely recommended read for anyone in an area where it’s common for people to have horror stories about extremely high medical bills - I assume these are uniquely American problems but I’m not too familiar with health care systems in other countries tbh

“The law allows us to charge whatever we want. If we want to charge a million dollars, she has to pay it.” - hospital billing representative when questioned why a patient was issued a $10K bill for removing a minor skin tag from her finger.

This book is like a horror movie but I'm so hooked.

I just need the conclusion to the Sol/Rachel story, then I can move on from this series - don't tease me Mr. Simmons!

Definitely a traditional style sci-fi novel - I have to say I'm enjoying it a bit more than Hyperion so far; I think it's something to do with knowing the characters and terms already so I can sit back and enjoy the story without having to look things up constantly

This is wild - so if you just overthrew the ruler of a government, you need to kill/exile a good chunk of your helpers; unless you’re absolutely sure they’re 100% loyal to you, you know they’re willing to rise up against the current leader & you gotta keep them happy (with much $$$) or it’s only a matter of time before they come for you! 😅

I read this for the first time when I was in 7th grade, which was probably too early considering the mention of abuse and adult themes, but it profoundly changed the way I thought about books, especially in the horror genre.

Excited now to revisit Jack, Wendy, and Danny's story & see if it lives up to how I remember it!

KH nails the shear brutality of war and the pain that lingers with the survivors after living through seemingly endless atrocities; Reminds me strongly of Elie Wiesel, just a masterclass of storytelling.
