Loving this so far

Loving this so much that I already requested the ARC of the second in the series!

Giving this one a second read from a different headspace 🤷‍♀️

My thanks to BookSirens for the ARC of this book for my free and unbiased review. I really struggled with the style of Rakesfall. I put it down a number of times and just could not fully engage. Sadly, I wound up DNF’ing at about 30%. However, that could be a function of my own reading preference rather than the quality of the project. Just not my cup of tea.

OMG this is SO good so far 😱

A gorgeous novel so far. I imagine this will find its way to several awards and best-of lists when it is published in 2024.

Drags a bit in the Rowan/Morgaine, he said/she said midsection. Downshifts to more of an annoying slog.

So far, this narrative is a mashup of:

1. The Tempest (magician and his familiar raise girl on magical island);
2. Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell (magic left England but at least one magician has been trying to save it);
3. The Golden Compass (evil organization wants to rule the world starting by separating magicians from their animal familiars with violence)
4. Harry Potter (kid finds out they too are magical)

Witchy women

Somewhat like Pirates of the Caribbean: poor boy wants to marry rich girl, runs away to make his fortune, becomes pirate, adventure ensues. It’s well written and very good so far despite this recognizable premise.

This book is so Dickensian. Loving it!

Witchy women, a creepy island, a curse? Sure. I’m down for it.

So for, this book is very good. It’s like Bleak House had a baby with Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell.
