Blue Iris, nothing too special but I like the last sentence from Sea Leaves: The only thing I don't know is, should the activity of this day be called labor, or pleasure.

very relatable

new and selected poems 2:

this one is quite enlightening about Oliver's way of seeing. Terns acts almost as a bridge between how I make sense of the world and how she does. Other than that, Lead and "The Poet With His Face in His Hands" were my favourites

nothing from "truro bear and other adventures" struck me

from "red bird": I quite like how "night herons" repudiates the question of what happens after death by a simple change of perspective

I also really liked "we should be well prepared" and "self portrait"

finished Evidence. I very much liked the shape of "To begin with, the sweet grass" and "Evidence", but I'm not so sure I liked the latter as a poem.

As I get further into this, the conflict between Oliver's externalised spirituality and my own seems to only grow. There's plenty of commonality in our conclusions, but little similarity in our lenses. Perhaps that's why I'm reading this in the first place.

finished A Thousand Mornings

this one's quite interesting, i especially liked: I go down to the shore; lines written in the days of growing darkness; an old story**; and the poet compares human nature to the ocean from which we came

despite the self awareness in "varanasi" about having a western mind it still read strangely imo

the discussion of absurd creation in dostoevsky's work, and the subsequent transition into finally analysing the myth of sisyphus is one of the best unifications of a complex text I've ever seen.

i am just left with the appendix now, which also seems to be literary analysis, so im hoping it's of similarly high quality.

"a little thought estranges from life, whereas much thought reconciles to it."

of what use is lucidity in a world bereft of eternal meaning? all our constructed explanations are fickle and lack power.

according to camus, lucidity acts as a means of multiplying experience, of living maximally, which is the only maxim that survives in the presence of the absurd. as someone who likes rumination, this spoke to me.
