story: the alchemist

yeah, the descendant of an accursed bloodline diving into the occult to save himself, only to eventually find no such curse was possible and "the curse" was just the curse's originator making himself immortal to keep murdering his ancestors manually when they come of age is quintessential lovecraft

the guy is also called charles le sorcier 👍

the discussion of absurd creation in dostoevsky's work, and the subsequent transition into finally analysing the myth of sisyphus is one of the best unifications of a complex text I've ever seen.

i am just left with the appendix now, which also seems to be literary analysis, so im hoping it's of similarly high quality.

"a little thought estranges from life, whereas much thought reconciles to it."

of what use is lucidity in a world bereft of eternal meaning? all our constructed explanations are fickle and lack power.

according to camus, lucidity acts as a means of multiplying experience, of living maximally, which is the only maxim that survives in the presence of the absurd. as someone who likes rumination, this spoke to me.
