The third book in the Tudor Rose series, GJ Williams has really found her metier now. Pacy, and impeccably researched, the plot was very plausible, and the characters fascinating. I was invested in Margaretta’s story (a fictional character amongst many historical figures) and was disappointed that she didn’t find love outside her family. I think GJW said that this would only be a trilogy, but maybe…?

Stupendous writing! Kingsolver effortlessly inhabits the persona of a teenage boy growing up in West Virginia during the opioid scandal. Demon’s struggles are agonising to witness but you’re rooting for him all the way. Magnificent story telling. My only slight niggle is that, knowing the story of David Copperfield, you know which characters will not make it. But maybe this stops it being such a shock? Still loved it
