When I first heard about this book (basically history - Europeans), I thought I didn't know enough non-Western history to appreciate it. I know more now, and it does help. It does help to know a little about Chinese and Islamic history, but for an 800 year-long saga, much of the story is very intimate. Even the (Chinese) discovery of America is mostly about 2 people.

I'm really enjoying this book! I thought that it would have a much simpler and more superficial plot than it actually does.

I'm really enjoying this book. Patrick Rothfuss does have a tendency to overextend some of the subplots, though. I'm in Chapter 104, and I feel like the main character has spent WAY too many pages with the fairy goddess of sex.

I was at 67% on this book, but then I switched to a new (paid) version of the book that has a word guide and a more accurate use of ************* instead of a subtle...As a result, my progress has decreased even though I have continued to read about the battlements and sundry. Here I'm at the end of my vacation, and I have so many books that I haven't completed reading! Dear L----!

This might be the first Doctorow book that I really like. Usually I love his worldbuilding but not his plot. The book is funny, at least.
