One thing I love to consider when reading a dystopian novel is how much of before the dystopia the character remembers and how that changes how they interact and understand the society. Here the main character has lived and grown up in a different world and so the conformity of a different type than in worlds like Brave New World and Fahrenheit 451, where nothing else is known or 1984 with only vague ideas of else.

yep this was definitely a part of 6th grade. Can remember if I read this or if I read the graveyard book instead but I remember people did a project where you made an outline of someone and then filled in the important characteristics of Santiago on that outline. Then it was hung on the ceiling!

I love a play. Also I read the introduction where they talk about how at the beginning of this play's history Mama and the Younger family get co-opted into a broader vision of just any middle/working class American family, disregarding the specifics of race. I thought this had an interesting connection to Sinners which I just watched and how the vampires introduce themselves as semi "we don't see color" people...

Hate to give up on a book without finishing but it is so drab and boring I can not stand to read it, especially when I have so many books I'm excited for sitting on my shelf. At some point I'll try to resume and knock it out but God is it boring.
