Two things so far. This is very repetitive. Aedion isn’t happy with Lysandra. Rowan isn’t just prince he’s CONSORT etc etc. these same points just made ad nauseum. Ma’am, I get it. The second is that I think I might actually miss this series when I’m done with it. I think I have stockholmed myself. It’s just so easy to read. I’d do it again again if there was a heavily abridged version tbh.

Why would she do this. This fucking sucks. I am about to start skipping chapters. Chaols not even the problem like everyone else has implied. The book just sucks. Nothing is happening. A whole cast of new and uninteresting characters. This might be as bad as the first one.

It’s odd. This whole playing house with side quests in rifthold. I find myself reading as quick as I can through Aelins parts so I can get to Manon and Elide and Asterin. This is some good shit. It’s still slow as hell, and not it the building way, but, as I said, the bloated playing house kinda way. But I never put the book down when the next chapter is a witch one.

Aelin is like, the theoretical good. A good queen one day who will make the world better. At the moment though she’s just playing house with her boyfriends and is wrapped up in her own shit. Chaol is the practical good of actually saving lives day to day and everyone can’t stop talking shit to him. His actions speak for themselves and yet SJM writes like we’re supposed to hate him. Not falling for it.

Laughing very hard. Rowans code for the new court is ‘protect and serve’. Holy shit he’s forming the NYPD. Also what time period is this? They have fridges and stoves and hot water on demand but not guns? Elide and Manon still the best part. And at this point I’m kinda on Chaols side. Holy fuck he is getting BULLIED. He’s come around to trying to save his people but they’re not Aelins, people so fuck him?

The good: Manon. Abraxos.
The bad: everything else. Maybe it’s just fatigue at this point but god it’s getting tedious. There just aren’t any stakes. Aedions rescue takes all of two short chapters and at no point does it ever feel like anything could go wrong. Everything always works out.
Also “she moved like a midnight storm”. ????? And How many times do I have to read “she was death incarnate” fuck

Look. It’s getting better. Way way better. Part of that I believe is just time spent with the characters, but the plots is also chapping into something more mature too. I just wish it’d cool it with the wish fulfilment. Every guy is hot and is either in love with her, her best friend, or super loyal to her. Honestly Manon is more interesting at this point. Another woman in the cast would go a long long way.

First chapter and she’s given up on everything and is feeling sorry for herself. Lamenting that the king will never be taken down because blah blah has an armada and can’t make a difference and she’s just one person and blah blah. Except are we forgetting she’s a fucking assassin. Who’s been in the same room as the king. Why didn’t YOU kill him. The thought has seemingly never entered her head so far.

First chapter with her as the kings hired assassin and we’ve already learned she wimps out and doesn’t kill her targets because they seem nice. It’s fine for adding tension since she’s lying to the king. But again I ask, THIS is the world’s best assassin?? Has she killed anyone ever? She has to be ‘dangerous’ but also pure? It’s a farce. KILL A DUDE. DAMN.

another quick update. Surely a good assassin is an assassin no one knows right. This has been bothering me. Her being an assassin has manifested in no way except being good at school carnival games so far. She can’t even stomach the idea of a dog being put down? And she’s the world’s best assassin? Loves to eat. Loves to read. Plays piano. Trouble sleeping. Loves dogs.QuIrKy GiRl is just like mEeE. IM SORRY

ITS SO MUNDANE. They’ve just discovered yet another dead and mutilated corpse, and I suppose here’s where the tension should be mounting but nope, here’s a chapter on playing POOL. FUCK. She even asked if the MURDERS where people’s BRAINS WERE REMOVED were INTENTIONAL!? Jesus CHRIST. The plot and the romance are entirely separate, and neither gives the other reason to exist. I’m on struggle street.

I can see why people like this but also I think what most people like is bad. I’m trying really hard to keep an open mind about this, but they’re doing a whole ass hunger games thing. 24 competitors vying to be the kings champion (assassin? Why doesn’t he just have a bunch of them?) and their first fucking test is… A RUN!? Go for a jog. You’re out if you don’t run the distance. Christ.
