Victor Hugo: *introduces a guy who looks like Jean and who’s doing the exact same thing that Jean was trying to do*

Victor Hugo: “Surprise! Jean Valjean is actually alive and this is him”

Me: *rolls my eyes*

SPOILER ALERT

lol, the “Confrontation” scene doesn’t even happen in this book. Jean reveals his identity, runs away to Fantine, gets there, gets confronted by Javert, then is like “can I get her daughter?” And Javerts like “lol no.” Then Jean just turns himself in.

and THEN he just escapes from prison (in the span of one paragraph) goes back to Fantine, and just runs away after hiding from Javert.

This book is way more gender-equality, anti-patriarchy than expected, which I love, but never expect from a book I have to read for school. So far it’s been a story about this woman trying to start a non-profit while also being subject to all the discrimination and sexual abuse the 1980s had to offer. Then the chapter ends and she’s like “oh yeah and here’s what I learned from that.”

This book is amazing so far and I appreciate every aspect of its discussion and structure.
































But there’s a typo on page 11z

It just took Valjean 70 pages to travel to a courthouse and turn himself in. Only 3 pages of that was even him turning himself in, the other 67 was just him stopping at like 3 different inns and paying people to fix his horses or whatever.

Say what you will about editing art, but one day I’ll make an abridged copy of this book that cuts out things like that whole page about Champmathieu’s daughters laundry job.

There’s an almost sitcom level scene in this book that the stage production cut out where Fantine gets arrested and Val Jean just shows up and says “nope you’re not arrested I’m actually gonna solve all your problems” and then Fantine straight up passes out in surprise.

Update: Remember Javert, that guy you meet at the very beginning of the stage production. He finally showed up! And it only took 172 pages if you’re wondering how drawn out this book is.
