I am reading this book for the 2nd time, this time from an Audible edition. It is easier to follow as the careful male narrator expresses particular dismay and shock as the personalities appear. His anxieties, the doctor, clearly increase the discomfort of the reader and add a sense of fear in me I did not have in the Kindle edition.

The Audible in this horror genre makes it “present tense” to the reader.

After Lost Horizon, this novel was a real disappointment for me. It had no plot other than the passage of time and a superficial recounting of one man’s living through 2 World Wars. It was sentimental, which I suppose was its primary charm. But even as a short novel, I couldn’t finish it quickly enough.

Orwell grows more frightening as the years past. In my 70’s, I find myself transfixed like a butterfly pinned to a board. I am living through the era of Trump, and now here comes “The Department of War”.

Arrests and imprisonment occur because of skin color, accent or country of origin. Reading 1984 is like turning on the evening news. We are HERE. Kindle edition:- forget the paper-bound books, right?

Trying to keep up with my THOMAS HARDY Goodreads book club. Excellent novel so far. Read once as a teenager but it feels completely new to me now. I love to contrast the writing styles of Hardy and Dickens. They were contemporaries, but keep in mind that Dickens was born in 1812 and Hardy, almost a generation later, in 1840.
