As the Zorg sailed past Tobago and continued to Jamaica, the toll taken by the Middle Passage was bleak. Sixty-two of the 443 Africans1 had died, as had 6 of the 17 crew members. Two of the remaining 11 crew—Collingwood and Kelsall—were nonfunctional, leaving only nine sailors and Stubbs to manage the entire vessel along with its cargo of 380 slaves, and one baby.
