Even if just for a moment, the Africans who lay at the bottom of the ocean thousands of miles away were seen as people, not property.

The life of one man is like the life of another man whatever the complexion is, whatever his colour!… Is this court or any court of jury prepared to say, these gentlemen under these circumstances had a right to drag the one & the other & throw overboard 130 persons who were alive into the ocean?

That there should be bad men to do bad things in all large communities, must be expected; but a community makes the crime general, and provokes divine wrath, when it suffers any member to commit flagrant acts of villainy with impunity.

A ship full of dead Africans was worth far less than a ship with half a cargo of living slaves to sell.

As the Zorg sailed past Tobago and continued to Jamaica, the toll taken by the Middle Passage was bleak. Sixty-two of the 443 Africans1 had died, as had 6 of the 17 crew members. Two of the remaining 11 crew—Collingwood and Kelsall—were nonfunctional, leaving only nine sailors and Stubbs to manage the entire vessel along with its cargo of 380 slaves, and one baby.

I started reading The Zorg after finishing Tender is the flesh. What stands out immediately is how the "heads" in the Tender is the Flesh are treated very similarly to the slaves, how they were stripped of their identity, chained, whipped and punishment for extending, marked as the propety or as in the Tender is the flesh by the quality of "their meat".
