Davis Morgan
Davis Morgan is starting Night of the Mannequins
Was not expecting this to be one of the most upsetting things I’ve read in a long while. I’m about halfway through and cannot pull myself away from it. Seriously impressive work yet again fr SGJ, at least so far. Let’s see if he sticks the landing.

Tommy Taffy is so frustrating because there is definitely a seed of this being some sort of allegory for familiar abuse and trauma but the story is so obsessed with writing disturbing, violent, over the top scenes that any of that nuance is immediately lost. I’d love a version of this where Tommy exists as a silent presence instead of loudmouth who squirts mustard in peoples’ eyes.

There aren’t many jobs where reading the Tommy Taffy book is part of the job description. I don’t know if I should be grateful or not that I happen to have that job.

Davis Morgan is starting Horror Movie
About 75 pages in and this book is seriously creepy so far. I’m going to have to stop for the night because I’m getting to freaked out. I feel like this is hitting all of the notes that I loved with Disappearance at Devil’s Rock while avoiding the pitfalls that novel had. Very excited to dig deeper into this.

Just read “Nèa” by Alex M. Berger which doesn’t have a Goodreads page yet. I really enjoyed I. It’s a very quick read, much more a short story than a novel, but a very fun and accessible sci fi story that takes inspiration from some of my personal favorite sci fi stories.

“Cannibal” gets the honor of being the grossest thing I have ever read. Worse than “Guts”. I have not been able to eat without feeling a little queasy since reading it. Well done, I guess.

Davis Morgan is starting Killer on the Road / The Babysitter Lives
I just finished “Killer on the Road” and am giving it 3.5 stars. If you like Stephen Graham Jones then you will like this. If you don’t like his writing then this won’t change your mind. I personally love his writing and had a ton of fun with this story. The villain is deliciously vile and the setting being pretty much all on the freeway was really unique. Definitely give this a read if you’re a fan of SGJ.

Davis Morgan is starting When the Reckoning Comes
I don’t make it a habit of reading two books concurrently but I’m finding that chipping away at the O’Connor collection slower and giving each story time to sit with me is the best way to enjoy it. Excited to start this book that I picked up knowing literally nothing about.

Davis Morgan is starting The Lathe of Heaven
Insane this was written in 1971. Ursula Leguin was writing SCPs way before they were cool.

Davis Morgan is starting The Corn Maiden and Other Nightmares
Just finished the titular “Corn Maiden” story from this collection. Maybe one of the best pieces of fiction I’ve ever read.

Davis Morgan is starting Clown in a Cornfield (Clown in a Cornfield, #1)
Wasn’t really loving the first 100 pages or so of this. It kind of felt a little “how do you do fellow kids”. Then I got to the first major horror set piece and now I am LOCKED in. If I didn’t have to get up early tomorrow I’d be finishing this tonight. Hoping it can carry this momentum through to the end and continue being a fun slasher novel.

Davis Morgan is starting The Only One Left
Only 60 pages in and just hit the first major reveal. This is shaping up to be a solid gothic horror novel. I didn’t know anything about it when I bought it and I’m excited to see where it goes.

Davis Morgan is starting Misery
I don’t know why I had such a hard time getting into Stephen King before but I’m really enjoying this novel so far. I’ve been very impressed with the constant tension between the two characters and how dangerous everything feels all the time. The little inserts of the “Misery Returns” novel are especially funny to me and I imagine King had a lot of fun writing them.

This book is actually creeping me out. I’m curious to see if it can keep this momentum through the second half because I’ve really loved what I’ve read so far.

It’s been too long since I’ve read some Shirley Jackson short stories. Only one story in and I’m already just as impressed as I thought I would be.

If it wasn’t almost midnight and I didn’t have to get up early, I’d be finishing this in one sitting. A book hasn’t gripped me like this since Piranesi. Absolutely brilliant and devastatingly bleak so far.

Bought this one a whim from a recommendation by one of my subscribers. I’m four stories in and they are legitimately very creepy. I love horror literature but I am rarely scared. This book is actually scaring me. It’s wonderful.

Looking for recommendations of novels about the Pinochet Dictatorship in Chile. I feel like I should know more about it than I do.

Davis Morgan is starting Books of Blood, Volumes Four to Six (Books of Blood, #4-6)
Thoroughly enjoying this as I did the first three volumes but they need to have an editor run through this. I’ve found several glaring issues in the text that should have been caught. Words that have their keyboard shortcuts in place of the actual intended accent on the letter, a sentence I just read was written ‘Do I?O’. Such bizarre editing mistakes for such a magnificent and well respected author.
