First, I must say thank you to Savana for gifting me this book. You had no idea what it was, so I can’t hold this against you. All in all, this has been an easy and interesting read. I would say middle school level literature, but some motifs in it caught me off guard—sexuality, Jewishness, protesting and more. I’m not done with it yet.

At first the Spotify narrator’s Appalachian voice through me off, as it is very thick. But with each chapter, I’m enjoying it more and more. Feels more intimate with the main character.

I am more than half way through the memoir. I still find it so uniquely refreshing to read a story in the setting of my home region. Each chapter causes me to want to sit and write out my history, my career hopes, my state of Alabama, my lesser known side, etc. I’m calling on generations of writers and journalists; encourage me to sit down and write it all out!

It is very cool to read a memoir that is set in the same stomping grounds as my own. Although, I notice with each page that my upbringing is different from the author’s. I think this just proves the intricacies of Alabama living—I mean the ascension from Southern poverty to employee of the New York Times is inspiring. Just as other memoirs do, I hope this one encourages me to sit down and write.

This book is right up my alley because it teaches such niche lessons and vocabulary.

I have been wanting to read some of Didion’s work for a couple of years now. This is the first book of hers that I’ve gotten my hands on. Finding it in a thrift store in Red Lodge, Montana, I knew nothing about it when I began reading. It’s true—I love autobiographical works, but I am surprised to hear myself say that I am thoroughly enjoying this account of grief, mourning and loss.
