Most of the time my aspirations as a writer are to be a consistent journeyman author who writes slightly elevated commercial fiction, because that's generally what I enjoy writing. But if I ever had aspirations to a more artistic style, it would be Miéville. This feels like a book that's giving me permission to really embrace the weird.

I am stunned by this book. It's so, so good. I picked it up because I thought it would be a good comp for my current MG mythological fantasy, PERSEPHONE'S CHAMPION. It is, but it's so much more. What an amazing debut from Kwame Mbalia - I have some work to do if I want PERSEPHONE to be as strong.
