An engaging read from Yokohama. He captures the tensions of the news room, and they are similar to those of any company, organization as there are always egos involved. The story/plot is worthy and there is just enough pace to the story to keep one reading. This is a slow burner.

40 years after its release… at least 25 viewings of the movie, it’s time for a read.

What a treat. I’ve just finished season five of the tv adaptation and this book carries the story forward. The Lamb character is every bit as offensive as in the series, but one can see how Herron’s writing has been ‘tamed’.

This as a compelling read but not compulsory.

Lots to unpack as Miller follows the leads.

My first “locked room” type of mystery. Grizzly series of murders leads to a complex and intriguing investigation.

Problems solved… problems to solve… detectives are closing in and the carefully calculated crime appears to have some errors in its equation.

A man from the past. The threat of a renewed future, a conflict, and a mysterious offer from a quiet man…

To finish a thought: while no Stieg Larson, the characters are engaging, the lot compelling, and I thought it was time to read the novel that became the national sensation in Japan and spawned one of that countries most popular crime detective series.

I’ve read a few of Higashino’s works, and while I would not put them in the same category/level as Stieg Larson

Another enjoyable le Carre novel. Indicative of the times as what was once common trade is seen as condemnable. Even the patriotic becomes a sin as the righteous judge past standards by current morality. Peter Gilliam, once home and dry in Brittany is forced to relive his past, his legend’s actions, and will pay the tax in current sums. Classic le Carre.

The real story is just getting started. 2 years into a ‘dead on arrival’ investigation, there arrives a mysterious classified file… That’s it. I’m only on page 133!

We’re off to a mysterious beginning. Sotoko is missing, a body is found floating in the bay, and the early leads don’t look promising…

One wonders what happens when you complete a project, leave a legacy, or life just goes on? The main character has trouble letting go of a defining project, one he hasn’t been able to replicate. Consumed with the need to know the protagonist begins looking in corners that he shouldn’t…

I haven’t started this one yet, but I’ve but it’s on my shelf.

I can’t say it’s gripping… more of a slow roller as the story takes a while to get going. I’m not going to give plot points away. Reading this makes me appreciate that I have and make time to escape in the literary world.

While many ‘classic’ economists, and I am not an economist but I teach high school IB economics, may consider Polanyi and his contemporaries as ‘dated’, or irrelevant in today’s world, the fact remains that his ideas on the dangers of unregulated markets are more poignant than ever. ‘Free’ markets are mythical unicorns whose rainbows distract societies from the dark and stormy realities of capitalism.

I’ve just started to settle into the rhythm of the story. Just about to start section 10.

Detailed mature depiction of a segment of adolescent life in Japan. The plot begins to get lost as the case grows cold and the story becomes focused on teen relationships and low level electronic crime…
