Dated but still relevant as the view we have today of the poor and the unemployed have not changed from a market perspective. With new classifications for the unemployed like; functionally unemployed, and ‘gig’ workers, it looks like labor, as a factor of production, is under more pressure than ever.

True to form, the story slowly builds and entices one further into the characters’ worlds.

Far better than the film.

While have seen the movie and read the rest of the Harry Hole thrillers, this one remains. Classic Nesbo with the same steely tone, this is much better than the movie… of course it is. Knowing the ending does not spoil the journey.

Another slow burn detective Kaga case. Things are not what they seem and a desperate young woman fights to keep her life from completely falling apart.

Enjoyable and consumable.

Classic characters return and Lamb is at his irascible best. The plot hums long and this is perhaps the only novel to TV (is it even called that any more) series. Enjoyable to the last!

Same old Miller… His writing maintains its edge. However, one does get tired of his characters going on and on and on about how hungry they are.

Parts are mundane and over written thus, the story drags. However, Roth writes a passage that encapsulates the American Dream (for one small cross section of the population) and it does leave the reader with a feeling of loss.

An engaging read from Yokohama. He captures the tensions of the news room, and they are similar to those of any company, organization as there are always egos involved. The story/plot is worthy and there is just enough pace to the story to keep one reading. This is a slow burner.

40 years after its release… at least 25 viewings of the movie, it’s time for a read.

What a treat. I’ve just finished season five of the tv adaptation and this book carries the story forward. The Lamb character is every bit as offensive as in the series, but one can see how Herron’s writing has been ‘tamed’.

This as a compelling read but not compulsory.

Lots to unpack as Miller follows the leads.

My first “locked room” type of mystery. Grizzly series of murders leads to a complex and intriguing investigation.

Problems solved… problems to solve… detectives are closing in and the carefully calculated crime appears to have some errors in its equation.

A man from the past. The threat of a renewed future, a conflict, and a mysterious offer from a quiet man…

To finish a thought: while no Stieg Larson, the characters are engaging, the lot compelling, and I thought it was time to read the novel that became the national sensation in Japan and spawned one of that countries most popular crime detective series.

I’ve read a few of Higashino’s works, and while I would not put them in the same category/level as Stieg Larson
