been meaning to read this for SO long but finally i started it today after watching a book rec vid from one of my fav youtubers and this came up. sososoososos beautiful so far, icl the premise is nothing way too crazy but i cant wait to see where it goes :>

writing is so masterful i am literally holden as i read this i am inside his head. this is sososo good. he is oppressed i feel so bad for him :-( he’s sensitive & yearning for connection in a world that never paused for a second when he did. ppl who say hes a sociopath or misogynist dont understand this book - he is overflowing w feelings but he represses them, he reduces all ppl to caricatures not just women

grabbed this off my bookshelf this morning bc i’ve been meaning to read it for so long but never got around to it - so far i’m enjoying a lot (who wld have ever guessed a classic that’s my sister’s fav book is good 🤯) i like his character and his observations and insights on the world cuz he’s just immature n annoying but vibes go hard im hyped to continue

continued reading the book this morning in the 2 hr break i had before class instead of studying lol, i’m rlly liking it tbh! i feel so dumb i didn’t get the cinderella parallels until tommy first mentioned the story even acknowledging the literal title of the book 😭 very very cool stuff n symbolism w the shadows and the names and ughhhhh ying/helen has my heart im so angry at the world rn

absolutely judged this book by its cover (like wowww sooooo beautiful omg) and so far that’s proving to have worked, i’m enjoying! character motivations and personalities are layered & complex; i loved our first intro in the plane scene & the immediate flashback after that. supernatural elements are v intriguing, historical stuff is v fascinating, overall super hyped to continue :-) love love love the moms name!

a real durwan - i was confused at first bc it makes a lot of cultural & language references i didn’t quite understand but the persistent human struggle and emotions underlying the motivations of all of these people drew me in eventually. when will this collection get happy :( i keep repeating this but every story makes me feel so hollow and empty. boori ma ur my g i wld never do u dirty like that 😞

interpreter of maladies - a few pages in i recalled that i read this in senior year of high school in ms othmans class. i remember annotating it & answering questions about it and i remember exactly who was in my group. i remember how unsettled we all were by the story, how we all kind of looked at each other and laughed a short laugh of surprise and confusion. the weird monkey story. i enjoyed it more this time

when mr pirzada came to dine - the writing & character building in this collection is incredible. great stuff. i want a piece of chocolate now

a temporary manner - i feel hollow. this was so good truly. in such a small number of pages entire people were created. idk what to say. woah.

clo is so annoying can she quit being so self centered n whiny

second hand embarrassment goes crazyyy but i rlly enjoy books like this that just throw me into an entirely new crazy world that other ppl exist in but i know nothing abt & cld never imagine. genuinely her job is my worst nightmare but this is p fun so far

this is like so fascinating so far my eyes r like wide open it’s flying by the characters n plot r so interesting and the imagery is so vivid in my head. i’m sooooooo enjoying & curious to see how this all unfolds. like bro from the very first page i was hooked & this is fire so far

this is ACTUALLY holy chopped idk if i’m gonna finish it, one of the worst books ive ever read. mc chick is gen diabolical and so unlikeable she actually sucks so bad. the writing is BUNS it’s sooooo cringe n tryna be funny im actually gonna die. and the rest of the characters r flat and boring and THIS IS SO HORRENDOUSLY BAD. i was reading it to avoid studying BUT IT CONVINCED ME TO STUDY

making me a bit queasy but the writing is good; ji won is a compelling character & the plot so far is pretty interesting. i hate george but i feel sooo bad for their mom. im not like lovingggg this so far but i am enjoying; still curious to keep reading

wow. this book is so well written so far, the characters r so compelling, & the plot is so good. i’m so invested rn. the suspense & story & her emotions & everything r just portrayed so well. im so scared for her. i hope she wins. i love how we also don’t know her name, shes just the woman in the shed. i love the glimpses into his past victims. i love the outsider lens of emily. & cecilia. so good so far.

mansard - what 😭 not where i thought that was going, weird & i didn’t like. why is she randomly in love w her friends dad. vibes were so off & confusing.
south - just felt uncomfortable & bothered. the mom frustrated me. the daughter i felt bad for but also annoyed me. i hated the rift caused by miscommunication it just bothered & bothered until i couldnt stand it

hotel seattle - no just no

timeline - polar opposite of the last one. jam packed with emotion and feelings and happenings and everything. caught me off guard after the emptiness i was full w when finishing north sea. i absolutely loved it. so raw and real. so fleeting. nostalgia but aggressive. a story so present and in the moment but somehow clearly soon to pass as a youthful memory. wow. the writing is beautiful.

north sea - haunting, chilling, moving, touching, but just ah so cold. idk. that was rlly good. i feel for hanne and for oda. and i just feel empty.

finished ‘when in the dordogne’ - characters felt pretty flat and the whole story was kinda boring, not my vibe. painted a vivid pic in my mind in a few scenes tho, lily king is supa talented at descriptions & imagery. just didn’t care for the main guy. wish it had been in the lens of the 2 caretaker dudes or just explored them more. the ending did give me those nostalgia vibes tho. not bad just not great.

finished the first two short stories - creature & 5 tuesdays. creature i was not a fan of. confusing and i didn’t care for the plot, was mostly icked out over hugh (i know that’s the point but just ughhh). 5 tuesdays was fun! was worried at the first description of kat cuz i was like no way not ANOTHER pedo but then i realized she’s his age and i was like phew! supa cute i enjoyed the characters & book vibe

read more of this last night, it’s like fine. i’m enjoying i suppose. starting to get super repetitive tho. and like i lived thru covid bro i swear i dont need a historical recap 😭😭 but no im being harsh. tookie has mellowed out shes getting on my nerves now. and what even happened to hetta. still don’t know the dif btwn jessica & louise and pen & anela or wtv. i like the disappointment guy he’s cool

not sure how i feel. i think i like tookie & her perspective. i was super confused going from chapter 1 to 2 and im still a little perplexed as to why the book started w that but i mean sure. the other bookstore workers are blending into one person tbh like i don’t feel they have their own personalities but i don’t mind them. i like the exploration of motherhood w hetta & jarvis. like the book vibe. cool stuff.

don’t normally like to read 2 books at once (so i’m gonna put this down until i finish the other one im reading) but this is such a unique & fun book so far tbh. i wasn’t sure abt the premise which is why i started reading the first couple pages in the library before taking it home, but i ended up finishing the 1st chapter and i only stopped to get home
