i usually struggle to find books that I want to read, but being shy of 1 month post breakup, 2 weeks post retrenchments & finding out my uncle is a drug addict, this title essentially screamed at me and the chapter that unfolds by page 22 explains exactly why.

a part of me thought paulo would just lightly tough on it but dedicating a whole chapter to unpacking that, felt extremely close to where I feel in life rn.

okay but what i will say about Alex is that he’s depicted the feeling of male desperation and i really fuck with it.

I’ve read super fa prints this book without adding any updates and i have a lot to say. firstly - i’m going unit this with an extremely skeptical point of view. people that recommended never lie, really like this book so ALREADY I don’t back it.

so far - not bad. it’s easy to read. it’s not blowing me away or anything but i want to find out more which is a really good thing

I’m finding it so difficult to comprehend the amount of despair that one experiences during or being a slave??? There’s absolutely no descriptive word, no metaphor, no story in a book they can actually allow me to picture what people went through during slavery and I think the same about my parents generation who had to live through apartheid. What is mine Masters are doing to people? No

i cannot put this book down. initially - i hated effi’s mom, but soon came to find out why she carried so much distain towards her child, because she wasn’t even hers.

This book is written beautifully. i love how the sentences feel as poetic as African people sound when they speak in general. the themes we follow are also extremely dark, raw and confronting. i want to stop reading but i simply cannot!!

so much has happened up to this point. i knew there was something fishy between piranesi & the other’s way of seeing life - but the fact that he was holding him captive ??? 😭😭😭 he did not deserve the death he received i’m so sorry the halls were too kind to him and let him get off easy. I have just over 20 pages left to read, brb

so far so good, I like how easy the book is to read. also - I have many questions about how the house was able to give the other cake ? like, where did that come from ? who’s stocking the Other’s shelves with stuff bc my guy Piranesi has to go hunting and gathering to survive. i still have many question marks but so far so good

It’s crazy that winter is showing my guy piranesi flames because winter is kicking my ass just as bad. would i have the grace to give up 3 days worth of fuel when i know i might not make it through the season? absolutely not.

also, taking a moment to acknowledge that you experience seasons in the halls? that’s damn cool

the beginning of this book twisted me a bit but i mostly think that’s due to the brain rot i’ve experience for not reading in so long.

i love that i’m being set in the mind of a traveler, who fascinates me because he truly believes that he’s the only one that lives in this world, outside of the Other. Loved the breaking of the 4th wall by addressing me as the 16th person too. this book really has character

there was absolutely no reason for elsa to die just as the life she deserved was unfolding for her, miss kristin Hannah ?! 😭🤚🏿

I’ve always thought elsa was beautiful. She’s always described herself as lanky, spindly, too blond - and in my mind i’m imaging a model - too frail for the beauty standards of that time.

i really hope that the farm workers get the resolution they deserve. the way the farmers are setting them up is so similar to the spacial apartheid black South Africans experienced

i’m watching hayley pham’s “asking strangers in nyc their favourite book, then reading it” video on YouTube and she’s speaking about historical fiction books that i now seem to have an appetite for.

she picks up kristin hannahs book and says “the story itself is so u believable that you don’t need to use overly flowery writing”

seeing them struggle with the adjustment of being perceived as poor is a tough pill to swallow man. I really hope elsa is able to find a good job or even better rafe ? though i’m sure he has a whole new family by now tbh. you can’t trust men 😭🤚🏿

there’s literally something happening each page it turn. i wanted to scream the moment the rain came, and even harder when summer stripped it all away from them. you gave them that glimmer of hope and took it all away in one season. i wish i could give else a big hug man, she’s so brave 🥺

just here to say i’m enjoying this book!

loreda is so unfair to her mom. it makes me sad a bc i see a bit of my behaviour as a kid in her and it’s tough to think i could have treated my mom like that. kirtsin hannah ? i think i need another

the juxtaposition of the growth of love between rose and elsa in parallel to decline of love between loreda and her mom is so beautiful and heartbreaking all at once.

Kristin Hannah’s pace so far is super enjoyable. i lowkey blind bought this book and had my doubts with the theme of the book but this is such a beautifully written book so far.

i couldn’t imagine living through something as devastating as a drought ? as a parent or a kid, unless i’m ant who doesn’t know any different since he was born into it. being an angsty teen like loreda? Mthatha felt like hell enough

so much has happened in the short 44 pages i’ve read. Else’s character breaks my heart. her father denouncing her and calling her “ruined” didn’t surprise me - but still ringed my hear like a wet dishcloth.

such traditionalist parents have absolutely never been my cup of tea. i’m watching the s3 of the white lotus and the mom reminds me of Else’s mom. she’s just worse 😭

kristin Hannah’s writing reminds me of khaled housseni. it’s very raw, makes me want to put the book down because i feel like i’m living the character. I believe one of my colleagues may have recommended her but i need to confirm
