In some ways quick to read because it’s compulsively readable in short snippets but also I have to keep taking breaks because it makes me so, so angry at The Husband.

A lovely collection of essays largely about aging, and I’m enjoying it. But her lack of any financial concerns or serious medical issues or painful losses (not that I’m wishing it on her!) creates some distance. It is a bit easier to figure everything out and come to peace with it from the comfort of your multiple houses and healthy kids and spouse.

For such a long, dense book I’m finding this a riveting - but uncomfortable - read. I applaud George’s attempts to learn and raise awareness around FGM and she is clearly trying to grapple with complex issues of race and class. But frankly I think she needed to find a Black author to co-author with on this book. Too much heavy-handed dialogue and hand-wringing white savoirism that needs a lot of editing.
