It’s safe to say that this might be one of the best history books I’ve read in my life

Oof. The double whammy of both German occupation of the Netherlands and Japanese occupation of Indonesia made this a rough chapter to read.

As an aside: Pulling up a map and finding where places mentioned is instrumental for me when studying history. Otherwise my brain sometimes struggles to retain the information in a useful way

Absolutely fantastic read so far. Informative, and grabs my attention in all the right ways

Between barley + wheat, rice + millet, and corn + potatoes, the Americas really won big in the staple crop lottery hooooly

Something I appreciate is that so far is that nearly everyone is miserable in this arrangement, even the ones benefiting the most (in theory) from it.

It makes reading it real.

It might just be because I’ve not read many books, but the writing style reminds me a lot of The Road

I’m at a chapter covering the Gold Rush, and it’s crazy to see all these familiar names pop up at this time. William Tecumseh Sherman, Levi Strauss, Henry Wells and William Fargo, Brigham Young, John Audubon. There are moments in history- bottlenecks; where so many historically significant people are all in one place at the same time. Fascinating.
