With a rashomon-lite structure, the book covers the lives of several people in the village. It’s not much of a who-done-it, it’s more of a why-done-it. While the murder is the culminating event, the bulk of the novel concerns the interior lives of the characters and their desperate dream to escape the violence and depravity of their poverty.
