Exquisite selection. Stories from the 60s carry the excitement of an untapped genre and stories from the 70s bring complexity and refinement. Great stories from Pamela Sargent, Alice Sheldon, Vonda McIntyre (absolutely wonderful), Le Guin, Harlan Ellison, Margaret Atwood. Now to the less promising ones, hoping to get blown away all the same.

Ok it’s starting to come together, it only took 109 pages

Is this terribly postmodern or just annoying

Somehow is even more depressing than the first one and equally repetitive

‘Meanwhile the sight of the red glove emerging from the dirty snow convinced the squire that the greatest deception of youth is optimism of any kind, persistent faith in the idea that something will change or improve, that everything progresses. The vessel had broken inside him, full of the despair he had always carried within him like hemlock.’

I actually had to look up how to read iambic pentameter to see what I was missing and boy did it work

And that’s just the intro

This is how I like my fiction: well-written and a little bit too smart

Holy fuck he’s so good

Upsetting, eerie sci-fi horror stories really well written so far

I haven’t found the horror yet, hopefully it’ll come later. Nothing beats Children of memory on that front

I’m not buying it

This is getting too pompous and borderline simplistic but it does feel like a soap opera you just can’t stop watching

Great so far, high expectations for the second half

It’s like an allegory inside an allegory inside an allegory (complimentary)

Really enjoying this. It was a good call reading ‘The rediscovery of men’ short stories first.

This sucks. I’ll just keep Asimov in my memories

Good stuff

Something’s missing

This is not working out babe

‘Their long-dead ancestors had wanted their descendants to know that, when they ruined a planet, it damn well stayed ruined.’

I had underestimated how much of a nightmare the US is

Fuck Kerouac and the fucking Beats

If I were Karl, I would be bursting with anger at how this type of middle-aged man always seems to take up one's time and energy. It never matters to them how non-committal or uninterested you sound, they always tell you about their son's success at college or their daughter's wedding or simply let loose a stream of non sequiturs. I wanted to scream; instead, I nodded politely.

As with House of day, house of night, I may be hoping for an ending to tie this up that may not come

I don’t know how she manages to pack all this stuff in a single book and get away with it (complimentary).

Jackpot

I’m loving this but it may be causing me mystery-induced exhaustion

This guy is smart
