If I were Karl, I would be bursting with anger at how this type of middle-aged man always seems to take up one's time and energy. It never matters to them how non-committal or uninterested you sound, they always tell you about their son's success at college or their daughter's wedding or simply let loose a stream of non sequiturs. I wanted to scream; instead, I nodded politely.

As with House of day, house of night, I may be hoping for an ending to tie this up that may not come

Something made me lose interest. Probably the fact that I’ve read 400 pages non stop and the book is packed with unrelenting tension. Tension should be released from time to time in such long books. I don’t think that’s happening here so I should probably take a break for today

A perfect display on how to shatter the narrator’s voice:
