Does Shuya lwk have plot armour? Will be tough for things to remain convincing if so. Also I like having a narrator who’s way into their own head, very relatable.

I think this writing style is great (albeit a bit much at times). The craziest part of this is seeing the effect this has had on the battle royale gaming genre.

I think it definitely reads like a YA novel but it's right at that border where it's not too cheesy for me. There are so many characters and with the names being Japanese that's def tough ngl. Getting into it, we'll see how this goes

Shoutout Jonathan Tsang for the rec!

RIP Dorian Gray you would’ve loved looksmaxxing. These guys have a lot of admiration for a man’s good looks I must say, really a different time. These genealogy bits are a bit boring to be honest. I enjoyed the painting monologue, I hope we get more of that. And more of a real plot direction

Not sure if this book will live up to the glazing attributed to it but I’m having a good time. Better than The Gambler for sure. I think the most interesting current thread is do artists put too much of themselves in their work? It’s an interesting thought bc I’ve always thought we look a bit too deep into art. Hard to tell if this is a chicken or egg. But now I can’t imagine art being made differently

Really out here spending time reading about two people acting like school children. Still not quite sure what the motivating act is for this book, what is to push the plot forward which is crazy for being a quarter of the way through. It’s just Alexander trolling the entire time

RIP Dostoevsky, you would’ve hated Fanduel. A very aimless book in my opinion, just spends so much time hating on Germans and Russians and Frenchmen. Some commentary on gambling and a bit of tease of what Pollina needs the money for. But otherwise, not sure what the motivation is in this book

The prose in this book is so hard to follow, I take it that’s the Russian? I like the idea that a “will they, won’t they” thing is a tale as old as time. Interested to see where this goes

The concept of someone knowing every single entity’s purpose and using that like some wizard could be a cool concept but I don’t like this books implementation. This book has too many nuggets, it feels almost like every line is a parable, almost too biblical

This book feels in many ways like a poet trying to be a novelist. This book is littered with prose, with little gems, but I find the characters and development really liking. I enjoyed the scene where he met the love of his life though

This is not a particularly well written book. Very surface level. Has some cool sayings and maybe some cool thoughts about nihilism but never seems to really dig deep into them

Choosing this from my backlog because Alex from Love is Blind said it was his favorite book (it’s the shortest book on my to-read list)

I think what he says about listening to one’s natural rhythym instead of trying to code a behaviour into one’s self is revelling.

I think the author of this book would be very happy to see Alcaraz’s triumph on the court especially in contrast to someone like Sinner

This book says a lot of interesting things about abandoning the judgemental self, essentially practicing stoicism with your play and not assigning humanity to aspects of your game.

Part of me wonders if people can tell coaches who've read this book the same you can tell people who've read How to Win Friends and Influence People. If your coach just watches you and doesn't say anything you can feel pretty confident

"Hiyah! Thirty years I have been a pioneering heart surgeon, but my son is the one who gets all the attention--for his bloody clothes!"

This is emblematic of Kwan's writing. Why he's so allergic to writing regular dialogue kills me. The Ah-ma dialogue he wrote about "knowing someone by looking at their face", he was really scratching the surface of something great but then it was back to normal.

Finally have my GOAT audiobook flow and yet this book is still a supreme letdown. The Michael and Astrid scene was all I was waiting for and may have been the worst written scene in the book.

“He smiled mysteriously” like?? Your wife found out about your affair? Your family is likely broken up? Couldn’t believe that line

Me finishing this book is supreme sunk cost fallacy

There are so many nuggets in this book. I question myself when I say things like "she's actually hilarious". This is someone who grew up around comedy writers and adults her whole life. Really makes you question your views on kid actors.

Love the Toronto shoutout.

5+ miles ev other day and a half marathon 2x a week is insane.

The Chip bit and

The rhythm did in fact get her

made me lol

This book has some of the craziest real lines you’ll ever hear. “I learnt about shaving my legs after a costar of mine’s mom made fun of my hairy legs.” Like??
I think the little woman’s dinner that girl’s family does when a girl gets her first period is beautiful and something I’d like to do when I have a family someday

“The Creator” wow, really good way to mentally prepare us for DS, stark contrast to the rest of the book. I highlighted his first mention because I’m so scared of how this might go

This book is funnier than I expected. Cool insights into child acting. One thing I hope this book has changed is the reliance on child actors “not being difficult”.
