In his heavy-handed story "The Sale, " Tendai Huchu's allegorical imagining of national humiliation in the face of neo-colonial domination through the mass emasculation of men, kept docile through estrogen administered rectally via suppository (!) reads as waaaaay more gross and misogynistic than I think he realized.

Reading this alongside the Tanahashi and Nishijima/Cross versions to compare.

Incredible that I'm almost 500 pages into this thing and that a) I'm not even halfway done and b) almost half of the book covered the foundation of the Safavid empire to the ascent of Reza Shah and the founding of the Pahlavi dynasty, meaning that the latter half of the book is going to be about the last century alone.
