Really struggling to remember who is who. The characters aren’t all that distinct in personality or voice. Even the main character’s name is lost on me

A little unclear as to what is going on in this first fight scene. Also unless this Chick is bashing this boy with an actual thick, heavy, two handed piece of tree, I think it should be referred to as a branch, not a log. I am in fact picturing a teen wielding a tree trunk as a weapon and I cannot suspend my belief that much.

Going to DNF on page 156. Halfway through and nothing has happened and I don’t care to continue. Plus Rayne just deciding to cheat on her boyfriend and justifying it to herself and also just lying to her mum and bf about what is going on is not hot girl behaviour, no matter how self assured she is about her appearance.

Attempting the audiobook once again. I think this is the third attempt as audiobook and I’ve had one attempt to read my physical copy. Kristoff’s writing is beautiful and the whole plot line to this story I love. I’ve really been craving a gritty harsh fantasy and this is just that. But I really struggle with identifying characters and places but that is purely a flaw on my end

Did you have to list the pronouns out like that? Egh just use them for the character and I’ll understand. Feels like very forced inclusivity when it’s done this way

I’m DNF-ing. I so wanted to love this and dive back into the world that got me hooked into reading fantasy at 13 (and reading in general). This book is not it. After the first couple chapters it’s not in the world I love and the only character that’s really featured is Tamani. Instead of it being expanded upon in a creative way, there are just two disjointed elements thrown in.

Trying to be as spoiler free as possible but these locks and cracks are getting tiring. I’m halfway and I feel like it’s the same thing over and over and although there is new information coming to light. I honestly don’t know when/how this is going to end how. My brain keeps going “whole new cast, whole new trials” there is not enough of one character (spoilers if I say who) and sometimes too much of Lyra
