Mother from hell

Bought on a whim and my first memoir in quite some time. 🤞

He found himself wondering if his life were worth the living; if it had ever been. It was a question, he suspected, that came to all men at one time or another; he wondered if it came to them with such impersonal force as it came to him. The question brought with it a sadness, but it was a general sadness which (he thought) had little to do with himself

Stoner leaves the farm without drama, exchanging inherited duty for work that asks nothing of him. By chapter two his course is fixed quietly, shaped by recognition, distance and a loyalty he will rarely name.

A palette cleanser they say

A home full of judgement and violence finally cracks open, and Cal stands in the wreckage realising he cannot save anyone but himself.

Ch 18 sinks into that lonely place where friendship turns lopsided and the cold bites deeper than the rain.

The chapter shows how an churches can reach into the private lives of boys and men, stunting them, warping their sense of self, and making normal growth I.e. sexual, emotional, personal , feel like sin. 😢

A quiet visit between old friends exposes the depth of a bond that has shaped the men far more than their families ever realised.
