I knew the ring was going to be meaningful in some way, but I didn't expect that. Oh dear god this whole family....

Might have this one wiped out in a single day, the writing just compels you to keep going. We'll see. Break for gym and errands right now, and I have two separate gaming groups meeting this afternoon.... so time might not be in my favor even if I want to 😅

Back to something a little darker, and this prose has won me over IMMEDIATELY! I've been wanting to read this for ages, I'm so happy the hold finally came through

Ah, so we're having this crash out before the reveal. Also, I saw some comments that the "twist" in this is too obvious but like... I don't think it's intended to be hidden from the reader at all? It's literally in some of the summaries I've seen for this. It's Ari who doesn't know, and her not knowing feels perfectly within the scope of her characterization. I'd be more surprised if she DID figure it out by now

The spiral Ari's going to go on over whether her Assistant used her when the truth comes out is going to HURT

I need to know if Ari is intentionally written as autistic because even if she's not, she absolutely is

The writing in this is beautiful, but I need to give some thought on how I feel about the rest of it. I have no issue with feminine rage as a concept and even enjoy it, but this feels like one of those cases where it's being used to preemptively tell the reader how to interpret the story to avoid indicating that interpretation in the text itself. Leaning toward a 3/3.5. Review later.

The last read wasn't as dark or as quick as I was hoping for so I'm overcorrecting lol. Side note: why do books about cannibals always have such gorgeous prose?

Honestly, I don't think this is giving me the kind of tension I was hoping for between the leads. Their goals are actually fairly well aligned and the factors keeping them apart are remarkably mundane given their circumstances. I was really hoping for some more complicated internal conflict beyond them both going "I'm not built to love and be loved"

Having main characters named Gwen and Morgen while I'm rewatching BBC Merlin is making me squint at this author

Might need to adjust my TBR this month considering how much work has been overflowing into my personal time, but in the meantime... Going for one of my planned candy reads. Because I do WANT to read.... my brain's just melting and I'm constantly tired once I can finally log off

Finally had a chance to read this morning 😭 Work's been rough and I've kind of only been doing that and sleeping this week. But I woke up a bit earlier today so that was nice. I'm really enjoying this one so far!

The concept of creating a god-like artificial intelligence because someone's inevitably going to make one at some point so you might as well do it so it has loyalty to you even if it goes rogue is CRAZYYYYY

Yeah. That revelation and subsequent emotional beat were unearned. I know I sound critical of this one, but it's because everything wrong with this is SO easily fixable. Have the leads meet sooner, have Melanie's suspicious grow more gradually, have her do some ACTUAL sleuthing, set up the more mundane emotional conflicts sooner... Everything that moves this story forward is incredibly delayed and then abrupt

Our POV characters have finally met! And I don't think the relationship between them is going to save this for me... Going to try to get this finished today. Honestly, I should probably just DNF, but I do want to know if anything interesting happens here at all. It's a shame if not, the concept's really good

There's such good concepts here but I'm honestly so boreddddd. I love lingering as much as the next person, but the internality of these characters is really not worth it. Pick up the SPEED, do SOMETHING with this creepy little town you've created!!!
