So far, I’m not enjoying this. Both Lucas and Virgil are half-assing an investigation that they keep reminding us they want no part of.

Lucas is bored with his career and Virgil wants to be John Sandford himself. This is very irritating and very disappointing coming from these two characters.

I almost stopped when Virgil crudely and cruelly said eff the victim and her sister.

Had I known he’s a Marine vet, that he’s flashing back to his time in Fallujah, I wouldn’t have listened to it.

I’m about 70% in now. It’s difficult reading stuff like this but listening to someone recount their time there is much worse for me. Especially since he’s heading to what has to be a climax at The Funhouse in Fallujah. I’m dreading it. I knew someone exactly like Billy. #semperfi

I’ve started to read The Arden Shakespeare Complete Works.

I’ve never been intimidated by a book. Thrilled, bored to tears, completely transfixed, sure. This book intimidates me. The font size alone….

Here goes nothing!

Julie is on page 100 of 544 of The Whisperers (Charlie Parker, #9)
After all the previous books and brilliance they had, he absolutely just lost me with using a trite, tired, lazy, cliche “guy thing” for Charlie to set up the rest of the book.

I hope it doesn’t pan out. I hope Charlie starts out on the childish revenge junkfest and then abandons it as he finds out more of the story.

I really, really hope so because if not, my reading this series stops.

I am so deflated.

I wanted to like this book. Maybe it would read better than it plays as an audiobook. But maybe not.

It's a mess. The timeline jumps between current and literal biblical times is clunky, confusing and takes you entirely out of the rhythm.

The main character is, frankly, a douche. He's whiny, immature, selfish, self-righteous - and a cop? What? I just....

It's a test of wills now to finish it.

I'm not wild about this. They keep flipping from current day to scenes in the biblical times but it isn't done well and takes you out of the story. Plus I'm not even sure what the point is. Stephen King is still the master about incorporating the history of a place into his stories - he does it right. Here it is super clunky.

So now Ramirez and the Wardens are enemies?

This is getting as bad as Changes, and I fucking hated that book.

There's already things I don't care for.

Why he insists on having such a mean, confrontational relationship between Harry and Ebeneezer is disappointing. It's like watching two drunk frat boys in a pissing contest.

It's one thing that has never made sense to me: how Eb is old and powerful as Hell, yet he's never heard about Thomas? That's NEVER washed for me.

I really dislike this aspect.

This character used to be heartbreakingly complex. But with the last five or six books, he's become insufferable.
