Recipes are excellent. The rest of it, not so much.

Boy, this is a sad book. A man looking back at his life and specifically the impact his alcoholism, gambling and absence had on his marriage to a woman with mental health and her own substance abuse issues. An interesting historical period, an Irish man pre and post WWII.

I bought this in a used bookstores recipes section. And so far I love the recipes. But the rest, not so much. This book is dated, so I have to give it some grace, but I find myself googling to find out what happened to the programs s they are discussing, and the predictions they make. And so far it’s not so good…..

Back at it! I’m through Lydia’s story, that was a tough go. Love Uncle Root, a wonderful character.

This is a great book, but boy is it hard to read. I think I’m going to get Samuel Pritchard and Lydia’s story soon and I’m not sure I may need a break.

Well, I have finally reached the Lewinsky chapter.

Fascinating read in 2024.

Lots of issues in here for a modern reader. A 50s white man’s view of colonialism, racism and sexism.
