I don't fully understand why the father views school as taking kids away from God, but I do sympathize with the main character for feeling the combination of fear of staying and leaving. Her grandma offered to take her to Arizona to get her in school, but she seemed to stop herself by remembering the "crickets, then gunfire, then silence" (Westover 8). Why is that what she imagines when thinking of leaving?
