I started the series adaption of the book now

So basically after the mom Ursula dies everyone else in the family started dying too

Ursula the matriarch of the family has lost touch with reality and seems to be exhibiting signs of Alzheimer’s, i feel like her death is near and when she is gone then the whole family is gonna completely fall apart more than it is now

when they bring up stuff about the war or political conflicts they have going on I get confused

i really liked the chapter about meme and her romance with Mauricio, I really thought her story would turn out different than the other family members but think not

I wanna say I’m understanding what’s happening so far, remedios was deemed to have linkage with death bc every man who met her died and she ended up going up to “heaven” or just rising into the sky so a bit of an opposing portrayal of her but I like the underlying religious symbols even in this magical town

Este libro cada vez me sorprende más porque muchas cosas raras que superan ese surrealismo como mítico o de magia, como en el capítulo que acabo de leer cuando uno de los gemelos hijos de no se que hermano ya se fue a confesar y dijo que había hecho “cosas malas” con animales

altas y bajas con este libro porque aveces de plano no entendió que está pasando con la guerra en esta historia.

things in this book definitely surpass realism but there’s a lot of mixing and matching with family members getting with one another i will say

creo que ya le entiendo un poco más. Se me hace muy interesante la dinámica de José el señor y su esposa Ursula después de saber que son primos pero aún así tuvieron 3 hijos. Pero en su día a día pasan muchas cosas medio no ordinarias, inexplicables, se puede decir pero lo reciben de una manera no mala o como que buscan un porqué de lo que está pasando

i started reading this in Spanish, my first big novel i read in Spanish but I’m a little confused on what’s going on! i think so far I get they live in a remote aldea and Jose is obsessed with alchemy and the weird artifacts the gitanos brings and stuff

so far some of these stories have had elements of gore or like scary vibes so I like this side of this author

“Sleeping beauty and the airplane” might be my fave story of this book! Idk just the way this character literally describes his infatuation, or as he so calls it love at first sight, towards this mystery woman who happens to sit next to him on the plane. Yet they never ever talk but he makes all these ideas in his head about their “experience” together on this plane. I want someone to describe me like that

i have really enjoyed the memoir like feel with a combo of reminiscing story lines that this book has, i would say that’s how i would describe the essence of this book

so far I can’t seem to remember anything from these passages from the time I kind of read this in high school. but im realizing that this book is not necessarily a story with a plot but more so passages of experiences and recollections, kind of like a journal per se. each one seems to incorporate a lesson but at the same time it doesn’t want to simply point out a lesson but just state a statement or something

I remember first being introduced to this book in high school and at the time I guess I read it but I felt like I didn’t really “read” it to the fullest extent of the word. Still, i remember this book sort of served as my first intro to this theme of love and war that I seem to gravitate towards when it comes to movies and books now

I have no idea why this read has felt so slow to me. Maybe it’s because the work itself captures a possibly real life scenario about a single mom just trying to move on and continue on with her life. Still i think we got to a point where im intrigued to know more

so far it seems like a slow read just bc i am still trying to grasp how the lives of each particular character either intertwines or not

Henry and cat reunited! If something tragic happens now ima be so so so idk flabbergasted and emotionally unraveled at this point

So at this point in the book, we see and experience Henry’s struggle in the war and how we already lost his friend and now is by himself and still he is determined to get to this final destination. Still during these harsh times he rarely mentions Catherine which is the concerning but interesting part to me bc maybe he doesn’t want to taint her memory with war and death

Lieutenant Henry left the hospital and is back at the front. I think the story gets a little slow as we learn more about his daily duties at the front as he goes back to what was his normal life before Catherine

The whole discourse and flirting and back and forth, “you love me right, tell me you love me” between Catherine and Henry seems so idk how to describe it. It’s like they’re both, or i guess Catherine started seeking this constant reassurance that he was going to be there and I guess he only reassured her at the beginning bc that’s what she wanted to her but eventually he also developed the same need

i like that the chapters are short & manageable! I also like that the beginning of the story does paint us a scene and setting but the plot also transcends and we get close to the core of the story which is the live story between the lieutenant and the nurse.
