The first thing i noticed how the main character isnt as knowledgable about the country shes in and even uses her own previous knowledge when the main character is at the airport and the TSA asks her if her mom is being detained, "I stare and blink and shake my head. I search my brain for this word, trying to find the creole word for it, or a french one--Detenir: to hold, to keep from moving." (Zoboi 4).
