Is all the muscular, hypermasculine, and sexist stuff supposed to be Wolfe putting us in the mind of these pilots? Or is it Wolfe himself?

Reading more carefully the second time around, which paradoxically feels more effortless, like floating down the river instead of paddling. But a thorny thought has occurred to me, and I’m curious to see what comes of it: Demon’s understated, ironic tone has me laughing as he describes truly miserable situations. Doesn’t this work against Kingsolver’s obvious goal of stirring our compassion?
