Reading more carefully the second time around, which paradoxically feels more effortless, like floating down the river instead of paddling. But a thorny thought has occurred to me, and I’m curious to see what comes of it: Demon’s understated, ironic tone has me laughing as he describes truly miserable situations. Doesn’t this work against Kingsolver’s obvious goal of stirring our compassion?
