PROTAGONIST: The main protagonist in this book is Thomas, who, in the last book, was sent into the Glade via the Box, where no one knew where they came from. In this book, they are sent into another set of trials, called Phase 2. The other protagonists are the other Gladers, mainly Newt, Minho, and Teresa, who was taken to the other group of test subjects.

INCITING INCIDENT: Thomas is in the Glade when Minho, a Runner, comes back from the maze with a report of a dead Griever. When Alby and Minho go back to explore, they get attacked, and barely don't make it back before the doors close, Thomas sees them and dives out. They then manage to secure Ably to the wall, and kill 4 Grievers, surviving the night which has never been done, and Thomas gets chosen as a Runner.

INCITING INCIDENT: In this book, the inciting incident comes when Fang's group hears an approaching creature, which they do not know what it is. They take a van down the road, when they suddenly spot a huge dust cloud on the horizon, formed by lots of vehicles on both lanes. Not wanting to take chances, they turn around, driving as fast as they can, when they suddenly get T-boned and launch sideways off the road.

ARCHETYPES: While this book has many plots, it is mainly a quest plot. Payden is an Ordinary, meaning she has no powers, which is illegal, but when she accidentally saves the prince, she is chosen for the Purging Trials, which are created by a cruel king, who says Ordinarys strip Elites of their powers. She just wants to get home, but throughout the trials, she shifts her goals to try and rebel against Ilya.

SUMMARY: This book is filled with lots of action. Payden, an Ordinary, is a thief, as having no power in Ilya is illegal, so she poses as a Psychic, who can read people. But when she accidentally saves Kai, a prince, she is chosen to compete in the Purging Trials, designed to put the best against each other in a series of competitions. Even though they are competitors, Kai and Payden begin falling for each other.

VISUALIZE: In this book, many visualizations made me feel on edge, or nervous. "A bullet pings behind us... frantically gathering my thoughts," Lu, P. 342. This describes how Eden and Pressa are running through a warehouse to escape Hann, the antagonist, and his guards. The descriptions inflict a feeling of nervousness and anticipation. It helped me imagine what it would be like to be in that situation

TEXT TO WORLD: In this book, sometimes , the characters have to give up something personal to save a larger cause. "The only chance we have of finding one (a cure to a plague) is to take Eden (Day's brother) into... 'No,' he says." Pg. 48. The Colonies are at war with the Republic, and a plague has spread. The Colonies will attack with Africa's support, if not provided with a cure, which Eden has in his blood.

CHARACTERIZATION: In this book, June, one of the main characters, always acts stiff and composed. If she acts emotionless, no one will know what she feels. On page 192, it says,"I catch a last glimpse of the Girl (June) staring at me. Her expression looks blank, but behind it, something flickers." This shows she always tries to mask what she feels and follow orders, trying not to let feeling show up

ANTAGONIST: In this book, the antagonist is the character's feelings. For example, Paedyn Gray, the main character, likes one of the other main characters, Kai Azer. While they face other challenges, such as crossing the desert, they both like each other, but tell themselves they hate each other, because Paedyn is the most wanted criminal, who murdered the King, and Kai is the prince, who murdered Paedyn's father.

STATIC VS. DYNAMIC CHARACTERS: In this book, the main character, Haymitch Abernathy, is a dynamic character. On page 258, it says, "Why did I think I could change anything... I've got nothing but a big mouth and an inflated sense of my own self-importance." After attempting to blow up the water tank, and failing to destroy the arena, Haymitch feels he never should have tried, but before he was confident in his plan.

CONFLICT: In this book, the conflict is Character vs. Society. Throughout the book, it is described how Coriolanus wins the Hunger Games, even though he is mentoring a District 12 tribute, where food is rare. In the end, it is found that Coriolanus cheated in the Games, and is sent to 12 as a Peacekeeper. He learns many lessons while there, while spending time with Lucy Gray, before finally sent back to the Capitol.

PREDICTIONS: In this book, I feel that Lucy Gray will use the rat poison given to her by Coriolanus to eliminate the final remaining tribute. "On his palm... sat his mother's silver compact... did there used to be powder here... 'I thought you might want to use your own.' ... Lucy Gray understood imminently." While it doesn't say directly, Coriolanus is giving the compact to her to fill with poison and poison food.

POV: The point of view in this book is 3rd person limited. "This entrance was for the poor people, Coriolanus thought. Or perhaps not poor. The word plebeian came to mind." This shows how we can see Coriolanus' thoughts and feelings, but not other's emotions.

PROTAGONIST: The protagonist is Coriolanus Snow, who grew up in the Capitol but, unlike what the public thinks, his is poor. He has been selected as a mentor for the Hunger Games"... for the first time, the tributes were to be assigned Mentors. Twenty-four of the Academy's best and brightest seniors had been tapped for the job." The Games had been getting bad viewership so they added Mentors to encourage watching.

This book has many specific settings, but the overall setting is in Panem, which is a post-apocalypse version of North America, far in the future. From what I have read recently, Katniss makes up a mission so that she can kill the President, while staying with her squad, in the Capitol city. They head to the President's Mansion, after the 75th Hunger Games, where the Rebels manage to take over Panem.

GENRE: This series is very Dystopian and fiction. In the first two books, we follow Katniss as she goes into the Hunger Games, which is a punishment for the districts after they rebelled against the Capitol. In the book I am reading, Katniss is sent on a mission to get some footage of the squad. However, a landmine kills a member, then another gets trapped in a net. They have to escape into the heart of the city.

In the last week of reading the Hunger Games Mockingjay, first, Peeta has been rescued from the Capitol, however, the Capitol have used a technique called "hijacking" to make certain memories have bad emotions. He begins to improve and is allowed to go to the dining hall. Then, Katniss is allowed to train and gets accepted into the military.
